Sexual Abuse & Sexual Violence Awareness Week (First week of February)

Understanding Sexual Violence

Sexual abuse and violence continue to be pervasive global issues. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), 1 in 3 women worldwide has experienced sexual violence in their lifetime. This observance seeks to amplify survivor voices, educate communities, and advocate for systemic change.

Impact of Sexual Violence

Survivors of sexual violence often experience long-term trauma, including PTSD, depression, substance abuse, and difficulty in forming relationships. The RAINN (Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network) reports that only 25 out of every 1,000 rapists will end up in prison, highlighting the urgent need for justice reform.

Prevention & Support Strategies

  • Consent Education: Schools and workplaces should provide training on affirmative consent, helping individuals understand that only “yes” means yes.
  • Bystander Intervention: Programs like Green Dot and Step UP! train individuals to recognize and safely intervene in potentially dangerous situations.

Access to Support: Survivors should have safe reporting mechanisms and access to crisis centers, therapy, and legal assistance.

If you or someone you know needs support, call the National Sexual Assault Hotline at 1-800-656-HOPE (4673) or visit RAINN.org.
